Defination of Operating System:
For each an every machine or computer the OS ( operating system ) is needed , it is impossible task to start or boot the machine or computer without an operating system.
So, In very common way or an easy way the Operating System is mediator or bridge between the hardware and user.operating is system software it can interact with the hardware.user use different programs /application called as software' .The Harmonization of software and hardware this job is done by the Operating System.
Where OS is used ? :
If the user has used applications or software ,or try any tools .so the operating system OS present on the computer.
There are many imp functions are performed by the OS like :
1.Memory Management.
2.I/O management.
3.CPU Job Scheduling.
4.Transferring Input from memory to CPU.
5.Control input and output devices.
6.Copy or move data from one storage device to other.
7.Execution of Programs and user Instructions.
8.Protection of storage devices from overwriting.
9.Maintain details of files.
10.Provide Security to the users data,files and programs.

There are various types of operating system for processing requirements but some are major and there types as follows.

2. Multiprogramming Operating system.
3. Multitasking Operating System.
4. Time sharing Operating System.
5. Desktop Operating System.
6. Multiprocesser Operating System.
7. Clustered system
8. Real Time Operating System.
9. Distributed system.
